Are Disney World’s New Tracking Bracelets Creepy or Exciting?

Would you let Disney World track your (and your children’s) every move? Disney is banking that the answer to that question will be yes, as they prepare to roll out a new electronic monitoring system known as MyMagic+.

The New York Times reports that Disney will be launching a “vacation management system” in the next few months, in which visitors to Disney World are given electronic bracelets, and can use them to purchase things within the park (the bracelets will be linked to personal credit cards), as room keys, and as a ticket, plus get smartphone alerts to avoid standing in lines. Bracelet users who pre-register before visiting the park will be able to preselect three FastPasses or other perks like V.I.P parade seating and character visits.

The tradeoff? The MyMagic+ system will let Disney track guests’ every move, from what they spent, down to where they went and what characters they interacted with.

Hidden sensors will allow character actors to provide personal greetings to passerby, alerting them to visitors’ birthdays, names, etc. (How Disney imagines this: “Hi, Bob, happy birthday!” How we imagine this: “Hello Bob from Montana, I’ve been watching you.”)
