American Airlines Plane Skids Off Runway in Jamaica

An American Airlines plane skidded off the runway at Kingston, Jamaica’s Norman Manley International Airport, after attempting to land in heavy rain. The plane nearly ended up in the Caribbean, but stopped before reaching the water. All 148 passengers and six crewmembers survived, though numerous injuries have been reported. The fuselage was damaged and reportedly broke apart, and the engines detached, as they are designed to do in a crash.

The investigation will likely focus on the weather, as it’s unclear whether the plane should have been landing, given the conditions. Thunderstorms were in the area, and passengers aboard the aircraft reported strong tubulence during the flight. Passengers also report that the plane seemed to bounce after the initial touchdown.

Manley International is located on a small spit of land in Kington Harbor, with very little space between the ends of the runway and the water.

At press time, only two people who were onboard remain hospitalized.
