JetBlue and Emirates announced a partnership that will allow customers with both airlines to book through-tickets between Emirates and JetBlue destinations. The two airlines will link their flights in New York (JFK), and bags can be checked through to travelers' final destinations. Customers will check in only once.

In a release, JetBlue said, "Over the next few days, customers will be able to purchase joint Emirates-JetBlue itineraries via the GDS, online travel agencies, and by calling Emirates reservations. Fares will soon be available at www.emirates.com."

Emirates, which is based in Dubai, offers connections to 108 cities across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The airline operates two daily nonstops between JFK and Dubai....read more»

After weeks of being slammed by the public and the media, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the TSA are on the offensive, trying to counter the growing backlash against new TSA airport screening measures.

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano has an op-ed in USA Today asking for patience from the American people. "We ask the American people to play an important part of our layered defense" she writes. "We ask for cooperation, patience and a commitment to vigilance in the face of a determined enemy."...read more»

Pilot Ann Poe is a 37-year veteran of the skies. She also has an artificial hip that routinely sets off airport metal detectors. On November 4, she encountered the TSA's new enhanced pat down procedure, and refused to submit to it. "I and any other pilot should not have to submit to physical molestation to do our job," she writes in a post at FedUpFlyers.org. "Pilots are on the front line of security."

FedUpFlyers.org is a new site put together by Michael Roberts, the pilot who famously refused to submit to a body scanner or pat down last month. Roberts' stand against the TSA's new pat down procedure sparked backlash that led to widespread criticism of the agency and helped inspire a protest against the new policies....read more»

Thanksgiving travelers take note: Continental's operations at Chicago O'Hare aren't where you left them. The airline announced it will move its ticketing and check-in counters next to United's at O'Hare's Terminal 1. The move is expected to take effect Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. However, Continental passengers will not be able to use United's EasyCheck-in kiosks or its ticket counters for some time.

This is one of the first visible changes passengers will encounter as the two airlines merge, and the first step in what is perhaps the most delicate stage of the merger: combining the two airlines' customer service operations. United is taking a risk by combining check-in and ticketing facilities at one of its busiest airports just two weeks before Thanksgiving. Air Canada announced it will add a second-checked-bag fee for flights within Canada, and from Canada to Mexico and the Caribbean. The policy change affects all tickets booked on or after November 11, for travel on or after January 19.

The first bag is still free, both within Canada and to Mexico and the Caribbean. Air Canada already charges a second-bag fee—$30—for travel between the U.S. and Canada, but there's no fee for the first bag....read more»

The latest Air Travel Consumer Report shows that tarmac delays dropped slightly in September, year-over-year, while cancellations increased considerably. There were four tarmac delays three hours or longer in September 2010, compared to six in September 2009.

Digging into the cancellation data, it's clear an increased number of flights was a factor, but there may be more at play. The raw numbers show a jump from 2,934 cancellations last September to 4,654 this year, a 40 percent leap. This far outpaces a 3 percent bump in flights (510,000 in 2009 to 526,000 in 2010)....read more»

The day before Thanksgiving is notorious for being one of the busiest travel days of the year, and the days surrounding it are bound to be pretty packed too.

This year's Orbitz' Insider Index lists the most and least busy airports between November 23 and 29, based on arriving, departing, and connecting flights. This year's five busiest Thanksgiving airport is Chicago O'Hare, followed by Los Angeles International, Boston Logan, New York LaGuardia, and San Francisco International....read more»

There's a movement afoot to designate November 24—the day before Thanksgiving—National Opt-Out Day, in an effort to draw attention to what many travelers feel are invasive new security measures from the TSA. National Opt-Out Day asks people to opt out of the TSA's body scanners in favor of the new enhanced pat downs, and to have that pat down completed in full view so "every citizen [can] see for themselves how the government treats law-abiding citizens."

The movement's organizer is Brian Sodegren. In an email, he described himself as "just an ordinary citizen who is concerned about what is happening" who "wanted to provide an educational platform and outlet to highlight what is going on."...read more»
