Three lines celebrate new-ship milestones

Like proud parents, cruise lines tend to brag about each milestone in the life of a [% 2290080 | | new ship %]. Recently, Costa, Cunard, and Princess have notified the world about the progress their babies are making.

Last Wednesday, Costa announced plans for a baby naming—specifically, the inaugural ceremonies for the Costa Serena. The festivities will take place in Marseille, France, on May 19. Events will include an official naming ceremony and an inaugural show. Costa chose Marseille to be the location of the party because of the cruise line’s longstanding relationship with France and the port of Marseilles.

Cunard applauded its newbie, the Queen Victoria, for standing up all by itself. During a special ceremony on January 15, the ship’s dry dock was flooded so it could float for the first time. At the event, two coins were welded together for good luck, the ship was blessed, and a bottle of Prosecco was smashed against the hull.

Princess has the most bragging rights of all these cruise parents because its baby just took its first steps. The Emerald Princess completed its sea trials, sailing for several days so employees could test the ship’s technical systems. The new ship appears to be right at home on the water.

With all the fuss, you’d think these cruise lines were first-time parents. Not even close. I guess it’s good to know the companies are equally excited about their 12th, third, and 16th child as they were with their first.
