Earn a 25% Bonus When Buying British Air Miles
British Airways' frequent-flyer miles, so-called Avios, have a deservedly sketchy reputation. That's because many Executive Club award flights are encumbered with sky-high fuel surcharges, which considerably diminishes the value of Avios.
But there are some flights in the Executive Club awards catalog that are good value, in particular short-haul British Airways flights within Europe. And they may make this buy-miles promotion worth a look, if not a leap.
Through March 23, Executive Club members will receive 25 percent more Avios when purchasing their annual allotment of 27,000 Avios. For purchases of 5,000 to 26,000 Avios, the bonus is 15 percent.
Deal or No Deal
All in for 27,000 Avios, the price for 33,750 Avios including the bonus would be $768. That's 2.27 cents apiece.
It's possible to get that much value from Avios when redeeming them -- for the aforementioned short-haul flights, for example -- but it requires more planning and analysis than many travelers are willing to invest. And even then, solid value will be found only on a very limited number of routes, limiting Avios's utility.
This offer rates a "buy" only for those rare situations where the purchased Avios are part of a redemption plan in which their value exceeds their cost.
